DIY for Latest Project...

This week I bought a fun project off Craigslist... for $30 I got this totally funky retro high back chair that I plan on recovering and more than likely painting.

This chair just screams personality to me and I could instantly see it's potential. Heck, for $30 it will be a great reupholstering project. So I went to my local fabric store for some sort of inspiration as far as fabric but of course no luck! (Living in NYC with all the great fabric selections has really put a damper on trying to find anything here in New Orleans!)

Then I came across a post on one of my favorite blogs, Elements of Style and got some great ideas! I might reupholster the chair with some hand painted fabric! I stenciled our bedroom drapes (read post HERE) and it was so easy and cheap. I think I'll give it a whirl!

Miss Thang Kellly Wearstler painting some fabric.

This inspiration photo got me thinking I should paint some fabric. I want to do some sort of stripe to add even more drama and height to the already high back chair. Now the question is... something silky? or a cotton to paint on? I want it to have a watercolor washed look and I think a silk would do it better than cotton....

Decisions...decisions!!

Oh yeah Tracy, I just read about her fabrics - they are really cool. I wonder how much they are a yard though?? - BOO

If you are like me, you will paint and re-cover the chair and then become bored with it. If not, and you plan on keeping the chair for a while, it might be worth the investment in the fabric. I don't know how much it is a yard, but maybe you can get a "to the trade" discount. You probably won't need more than a couple of yards and you could consider the finished piece an original New Orleans work of art.

Have you looked at the remnant tables at Hancock and Fabrixx? I have found some great fabrics priced inexpensively. The fabric for my four dining chairs only cost me $8 total! Interior Fabrics has a good selection of fabrics at $9.99/yd. You can check them out online as well. Also, try the linen section of thrift stores (like Red, White, and Blue). You might find some curtains that you can use to upholster the chair and make a couple of extra accent pillows. I recently found some pre-made curtains in the mattress ticking I was searching for. I am using the fabric to make valances in my kitchen.
